Three Former Senior Police Officials Sentenced to Death by ICT
The three-member judicial panel, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mozumder, delivered the verdict in a crowded courtroom on Monday afternoon, January 26.
The other two sentenced to death are former DMP Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty and former Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Ramna Zone, Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam. The tribunal panel also included Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmood and Judge Md. Mohitul Huq Enam Chowdhury. According to the case documents, the accused were found guilty of carrying out massacres and crimes against humanity by ordering indiscriminate firing to suppress the July uprising, specifically in the Chankharpul area of the capital where six people, including a student named Anas, were killed.
Out of the eight accused in this case, Habibur Rahman and three others remain at large. The trial was conducted in their absence, and warrants have been issued for their immediate arrest. Earlier in the morning, four other accused—former Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Md. Arshad Hossain and Constables Md. Sujon Miah, Md. Imaz Hossain Emon, and Md. Nasirul Islam—were produced before the tribunal under heavy security.
This judgment is being regarded as one of the most significant legal milestones in the prosecution of offenses related to the July-August mass uprising. The tribunal noted that the systematic use of lethal force against unarmed civilians constituted a grave violation of international humanitarian laws.
