Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Forecast for 13 Regions in Bangladesh; River Ports on Alert
According to an internal forecast released on Sunday, May 3, 2026, valid from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM, these areas are likely to experience temporary squally winds reaching speeds of 45 to 60 km/h along with rain or thundershowers.
The BMD’s warning covers the regions of Pabna, Dhaka, Tangail, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and Sylhet. Due to the anticipated turbulent weather, river ports in these areas have been advised to hoist Inland Riverine Warning Signal No. 1. This follows a previous forecast on Saturday which indicated that the wind speed of the Nor’westers could escalate to 60–80 km/h in certain locations.
In addition to the stormy winds, the meteorological office has warned of heavy to very heavy precipitation. Specifically, parts of the Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions may record rainfall ranging from 44 to 88 mm (heavy) to over 88 mm (very heavy). This surge in rainfall is expected to cause temporary waterlogging in urban areas. Furthermore, local administrations and residents in the hilly terrains of the Chattogram division have been specifically alerted to the heightened risk of landslides triggered by these extreme weather conditions.
