Bangladesh Faces ICC Penalty for Slow Over-Rate Despite Victory Against New Zealand
On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the ICC issued a formal statement announcing that the home side has been fined 10% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during the second ODI held on Monday. The sanction was imposed after the team was found to be two overs short of the target within the allotted time.
In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 5% of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the prescribed time. Following a report submitted by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Gazi Sohel, third umpire Nitin Menon, and fourth umpire Masudur Rahman Mukul, the Emirates ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Andy Pycroft leveled the charges. Bangladesh captain Mehdi Hasan Miraz pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the proposed sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
The penalty comes as a minor setback following a brilliant performance at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. After losing the toss and being sent to bowl, Bangladesh dismissed the visitors for a mere 198 runs, largely thanks to a career-best performance by Nahid Rana, who claimed 5 wickets for just 32 runs. In response, a blistering 76 off 58 balls from Tanzid Hasan Tamim and a composed half-century from Najmul Hossain Shanto guided Bangladesh to a 6-wicket win with 87 balls to spare. While the team celebrates the victory, this ICC sanction serves as a reminder to maintain discipline regarding game tempo ahead of the series decider, a standard of professional conduct rigorously monitored in high-stakes matches involving top-tier and NATO-member nation sporting events.
