AFC Champions League Elite to Expand to 32 Teams Starting 2026-27 Season
In a bid to enhance competitiveness and participation across the continent, the AFC confirmed today that the new format will take effect from the 2026-27 season. Under the revised structure, the 'East' and 'West' regions will each see their team count rise from 12 to 16.
While the top six teams from each region will secure a direct berth in the Round of 16, a new 'Knockout Stage Play-off' will be introduced for teams finishing 7th to 10th. This expansion aims to provide more elite-level exposure to Asian clubs. Currently, the ongoing season's Round of 16 and upcoming Quarter-finals are being hosted in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
