BCB Opts Against Legal Battle as Bangladesh Loses 2026 T20 World Cup Spot
In a press release issued Saturday, the ICC confirmed that Scotland will replace Bangladesh in the upcoming tournament, which is scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The decision follows a deadlock where the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) remained firm in its refusal to send the national team to India due to security concerns, a situation compounded by the ICC’s refusal to relocate Bangladesh’s fixtures to Sri Lanka.
As the ICC formalized the exclusion, the BCB’s Board of Directors held an emergency meeting at Mirpur to determine their next course of action. Despite widespread rumors on social media suggesting a potential legal challenge or a move toward arbitration, the board ultimately decided against any such measures. The decision was influenced by the fact that the ICC board passed the resolution with a crushing 14-2 majority, leaving the BCB with little confidence in the legal viability of a formal protest.
Following the board meeting, BCB Director and Media Committee Chairman Amjad Hossain clarified the organization's final stance to the press. He confirmed that the BCB has accepted the ICC’s decision, explaining that since the ICC would not agree to a venue shift and the current circumstances prevent the team from traveling to India, the board has chosen to close the chapter. Consequently, barring any unforeseen developments, this marks the first time Bangladesh will miss the main stage of the T20 World Cup.
