Shorna’s Blitz with Four Sixes Leads Tigresses to Victory in World Cup Qualifiers
After playing a blistering cameo of 37 runs featuring four sixes, she also claimed a wicket with the ball to secure the Player of the Match award.
Earlier on Tuesday, after losing the toss and being sent in to bat, the Tigresses posted a competitive total of 168 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs. Openers Dilara Akter and Jawayriya Ferdous provided a solid foundation with a 49-run partnership. However, the highlight of the match was Shorna Akter’s batting. In an unbeaten 14-ball innings of 37 runs, she smashed 4 sixes, setting a new record for the most sixes in an innings in Bangladesh women's cricket history. With a strike rate of 264.28, this is the second-highest strike rate for an innings of over 20 runs by a Bangladeshi woman. Previously, the record for most sixes (3) was held by Nigar Sultana and Ayasha Rahman.
Chasing a target of 169, Papua New Guinea struggled under pressure due to a sluggish start. Although the opening pair added 32 runs, they could not break through Bangladesh's disciplined bowling attack. A 64-run partnership between Captain Brenda Tau (35) and Sibona Jimmy (28) only managed to reduce the margin of defeat. Ultimately, their innings ended at 138 for 9 in 20 overs. For Bangladesh, Sanjida Akter Meghla, Rabeya, Ritu Moni, Fahima, Sobhana, and Shorna each picked up one wicket. With this win, the Red and Green representatives have moved a step closer to the World Cup main event.
