Opposition MPs Lack Knowledge of Parliamentary Etiquette, Says Road Transport Minister
Speaking during the discussion on the Thanksgiving Motion on the President's speech on Wednesday, April 29, 2026—the 24th day of the first session of the 13th National Parliament—the Minister asserted that opposition members often seem unaware of the specific rules of procedure or how to voice concerns on key issues effectively. To address this, he proposed organizing a special workshop under the guidance of the Prime Minister to sharpen and mature their understanding of parliamentary norms.
Sheikh Rabiul Alam further criticized the opposition camp, stating it is natural for a specific party that has never been voted into power to experience "political agony." He remarked that those who were forced to apologize to the public for past misdeeds before the election are politically bankrupt. The Minister made it clear that attempts to mislead the public would fail, noting that the people of the country thwarted all conspiracies by granting the BNP an absolute majority in the 2026 elections. He also mentioned that 71 percent of the population voted in favor of implementing the "July Charter," with a vast majority desiring the country to be governed according to the BNP's formula.
During his speech, the Minister reminisced about his own political struggles, emphasizing that the current Parliament is not a gift but the result of 17 years of bloody struggle. He shared that he had personally faced 193 cases, been imprisoned nine times, and endured the horrors of enforced disappearance and remand during the anti-fascism movement. Praising the long leadership struggle of Prime Minister Tarek Rahman, he warned that the democracy achieved through the lives of thousands of activists would not be allowed to be undermined by any group's conspiracy. He concluded by urging the opposition to abandon politics devoid of public support and adopt a more constructive path.
