High Court Grants Anticipatory Bail to Mufti Amir Hamza in Defamation Case
Following a hearing on Monday, April 27, 2026, the court issued the order. Previously, on April 21, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Sirajganj had issued an arrest warrant against him in connection with the case.
According to case details, Humayun Kabir, General Secretary of the Sirajganj District Bar Association, filed the lawsuit on April 2 under Sections 296, 500, and 504. The plaintiff alleged that during a Friday sermon at the Hatsh Haripur Grand Mosque in Kushtia on March 26, Amir Hamza labeled Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud as "atheist and anti-Islamic." This was reportedly in response to a speech given by the Minister honoring the Great Liberation War and freedom fighters. The plaintiff contended that such remarks defamed the Sirajganj native and hurt religious sentiments.
The arrest warrant was initially issued after Amir Hamza failed to appear in court on a scheduled date despite being summoned. The incident has sparked significant political discussion in Sirajganj. With the High Court’s latest ruling, the immediate risk of arrest has been averted. While the legal proceedings remain ongoing, the parliamentarian is permitted to carry out his regular activities for the duration of the eight-week bail period.
