In a post shared on her verified Facebook account on Monday evening, April 20, 2026, she revealed that she was offered a nomination by the party’s high command but declined it personally.

In her statement, Afroza Abbas clarified that she had never sought a nomination for the reserved seats. "I am grateful to the Party Secretary General for the offer, but I politely declined," she wrote.

She further explained that her current priority is the health and well-being of her husband, BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, who is currently unwell. Afroza Abbas emphasized that, during this challenging time, being by her husband's side is more important to her than any political position or parliamentary seat. She also urged the public and media to refrain from spreading misleading information regarding her nomination.

Despite her personal decision, she extended her best wishes to the 36 women who were selected, urging them to play a robust role in protecting women's rights and dignity within the legislature.

The exclusion of heavyweight names like Afroza Abbas, Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia, and cultural icons such as Baby Naznin from the final list had initially fueled rumors of internal friction. However, analysts believe her clarification has put those rumors to rest. Observers noted that the culture of prioritizing personal or family responsibilities over political titles—as seen in developed democracies—sets a positive precedent for political etiquette in Bangladesh.
