However, the exclusion of several influential veteran leaders and popular cultural icons from the list has sparked significant discussion within political circles. Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the names during a press conference at the party’s central office in Nayapaltan on Monday, April 20, 2026.

Notable Exclusions: Veterans and Stars Despite actively participating in the interview process and submitting nomination forms, several high-profile figures failed to secure a spot. Among the veteran politicians absent from the final list are Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia and Afroza Abbas.

The cultural wing of the party also saw major snubs, with prominent singers Kanak Chapa, Baby Naznin, and Rizia Parvin missing out on nominations. Additionally, social media personalities Meghna Alam and Farzana Sithy, who were widely discussed during the selection phase, were also excluded.

Family Ties Not Enough In a move that surprised many, several family members of influential party stalwarts were also left out. These include:

  • Nasima Akter Kolpona, wife of the late Nasiruddin Pintu.

  • Hasna Moudud, wife of the late Barrister Moudud Ahmed.

  • Aparna Roy, daughter of Gayeshwar Chandra Roy.

  • Hasina Ahmed, wife of Salahuddin Ahmed.

The Selection Scale According to party sources, the competition was intense, with 1,025 nomination forms sold and approximately 900 submitted. Each applicant paid 2,000 BDT for the form and a security deposit of 50,000 BDT. On April 17 and 18, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman conducted virtual interviews from London, alongside Standing Committee members present in Dhaka.

Political analysts suggest that the party’s decision reflects a shift toward prioritizing active organizational skills over dynastic or celebrity influence, mirroring democratic processes seen in developed international political systems.
