Fuel Price Hike is a 'Double Blow' to the Poor: Jamaat-e-Islami
In a statement issued on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the party's Secretary General and former MP, Mia Golam Porwar, stated that the new prices for diesel, kerosene, octane, and petrol will have a severe negative impact on the overall economy and bring extreme misery to the common man.
The Secretary General characterized the current situation as a "double blow" (Morar upor kharar gha) for the public, who are already struggling with the high cost of living.
In his statement, Mia Golam Porwar detailed the specific price hikes:
-
Kerosene: Increased by 18 BDT per liter.
-
Octane: Increased by 20 BDT per liter.
-
Petrol: Increased by 19 BDT per liter.
-
Diesel: Increased by 15 BDT per liter.
He warned that these hikes would lead to an immediate rise in transportation costs, directly inflating the prices of essential commodities. "While the income of middle and low-income groups remains stagnant, their expenses are multiplying, making daily survival nearly impossible," Porwar remarked.
The statement further highlighted that the surge in fuel costs would escalate production expenses in factories and increase the cost of irrigation and inputs in the agricultural sector. Jamaat leaders believe this will not only intensify inflation but also pose a significant threat to national food security.
Jamaat-e-Islami has urged the government to immediately reconsider this "anti-people" decision and bring fuel prices down to a tolerable level. Porwar also called on the government to act more responsibly in ensuring a stable energy market, drawing comparisons to the strategic fuel management systems seen in developed international nations.
