NCP to Contest 2 Seats Within Jamaat Alliance for Reserved Women’s Slots
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, voting for the reserved women's seats is slated for May 12, 2026.
Under the alliance-based seat distribution equation, the BNP and its allies have secured 36 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami and its partners have attained 13. As a partner in the Jamaat-led alliance with six general seats, the NCP is proportionally entitled to one reserved seat. However, following strategic negotiations, the NCP demanded an additional slot. In a consensus move, Jamaat has decided to allocate one of its own quota seats to Dr. Mahmuda Alam Mitu, while the NCP will nominate Monira Sharmin for its original quota.
Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad stated that the extra seat is being granted to the NCP to maintain alliance unity. He further revealed that Jamaat is also allocating one seat to JAGPA and a symbolic, honorary nomination to the mother of a child martyred during the July mass uprising. NCP Media Secretary Yasir Arafat noted that the formal list of candidates will be officially published by April 20.
Political analysts view this process of including professional and qualified women in reserved seats—aligning with international parliamentary norms—as a positive step for the 13th Parliament. By balancing political representation with honorary tributes to the "July Revolution" families, the alliance aims to strengthen its grassroots legitimacy. The upcoming May 12 vote will finalize the female representation that will complement the general seats in the treasury and opposition benches.
