PM Tarique Rahman Submits Election Expense Return for Dhaka-17
According to the return filed on Monday, March 30, 2026, his total election-related spending for the constituency amounted to 23 lakh BDT.
The expenditure remains well within the legal ceiling mandated by the Representation of the People Order (RPO). For the Dhaka-17 constituency, which has 333,777 registered voters, the maximum allowable spending limit was set at 25 lakh BDT.
Primary Expenses: The return indicates that the largest portion of the funds was allocated to managing polling agents and volunteer staff on election day.
Legal Deadline: The submission comes as part of the mandatory requirement for all candidates to file their expense reports within 30 days of the official gazette publication, which was issued on February 13, 2026.
A Landslide Victory Tarique Rahman, the Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led his party to a two-thirds majority in the general elections held on February 12, 2026.
Dual Win: In addition to the Dhaka-17 seat, the Prime Minister also secured a victory in the Bogura-6 constituency.
Constitutional Shift: This election was the first held under the "July Charter" reforms following the 2024 uprising, marking the return of the BNP-led alliance to power after nearly two decades.
The public disclosure of the Prime Minister’s election expenses is being viewed as a move toward greater transparency in the new administration's political financing. Election officials noted that while several candidates have struggled to meet the filing deadline, the prompt submission by the head of government sets a regulatory precedent for the 13th Parliament.
