Mirza Abbas Shows Signs of Recovery in Singapore Following Brain Surgery
On Monday, March 23, 2026, Social Welfare Minister Prof. Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain confirmed the positive development, stating that various medical parameters are now moving in the right direction. While acknowledging that recovery from complex brain-related complications takes time, Dr. Zahid expressed optimism after speaking with the attending physicians in Singapore.
In a significant step toward rehabilitation, his personal assistant, Mizanur Rahman Sohel, reported that doctors assisted the veteran politician in sitting up in a chair for the first time on Monday morning. Abbas has also begun to regain his ability to speak gradually, although he remains under close medical observation. He was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on March 15 following a nearly four-hour brain surgery at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on March 13. The surgery followed an emergency hospitalization on March 11 after he lost consciousness during iftar.
Mirza Abbas is currently accompanied in Singapore by his wife, Afroza Abbas, and their son, Yasir Abbas. His family and senior party colleagues have requested the nation to pray for his swift and full recovery. The government and party leadership, including Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, have been regularly monitoring his condition since the onset of his illness.
