The High Court bench of Justice Md. Zakir Hossain is scheduled to hear two separate writ petitions filed by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidates challenging the victory of two top leaders from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. These petitions represent the first major post-election legal disputes following the February 12 polls, where the BNP secured a landslide victory but Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the second-largest party and formed the official opposition.

The first petition involves the Cumilla-11 constituency, where Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher was declared the winner with 1,33,308 votes. His nearest rival, BNP candidate Kamrul Huda, who received 76,638 votes, has challenged the result and demanded a full recount. The second challenge focuses on the Sirajganj-4 seat, where Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Md. Rafiqul Islam Khan secured a narrow unofficial victory with 1,61,872 votes, defeating BNP’s M. Akbar Ali by a margin of only 594 votes. Akbar Ali has also filed for a recount, alleging irregularities in the final tallying process.

These hearings are being conducted under Section 49 of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), which allows for the formation of election tribunals to resolve such disputes. While Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has largely characterized the 2026 elections as fair and inclusive, these specific cases highlight localized tensions between the two leading political forces. The court's decision today will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for several other pending challenges across the country and determine the final composition of the opposition bench in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.
