Asif Mahmud Hints at Mayoral Candidacy for Dhaka South; NCP Demands Local Polls
Speaking at a press conference at the party's central office in Banglamotor on Tuesday (February 24), he mentioned that the party has asked him to prepare for the role, though a final decision is pending. During the briefing, Asif criticized the hasty appointment of administrators to six city corporations, claiming a lack of transparency and a missing timeframe in their appointment notifications. He urged the government to provide a clear roadmap for local government elections to alleviate public suffering in citizen services.
The NCP spokesperson also raised concerns over a perceived "reign of fear," citing recent incidents of attacks on the public and journalists during police operations. While he discouraged irrational road blockades, he emphasized that the right to protest for legitimate demands must be protected. Regarding the upcoming local elections, Asif clarified that while there might be no party symbols, the NCP would organizationally support competent individual candidates. Hannan Masud, MP and member secretary of the NCP’s local government election committee, was also present and reaffirmed the party's commitment to contesting all upcoming local and municipal elections.
