BNP Contenders Emerge for Reserved Women’s Seats in 13th Parliament
As the primary governing party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is set to secure the majority of these seats, estimated at 35 to 36, based on their proportional representation in the house. The Election Commission (EC) is reportedly planning to announce the election schedule and finalize the selection process during the upcoming month of Ramadan. Under constitutional mandates requiring the completion of this process within 90 days of the general election, efforts are underway to finalize the list of female MPs before the Eid holidays.
Intense lobbying has already begun within the BNP and its various affiliate organizations for these prestigious nominations. Party insiders suggest that former leaders of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and young female activists who were at the forefront of the movement over the last 17 years are likely to be prioritized. BNP policymakers have stated that the final selection will be based on political sacrifice, experience, and loyalty to the party. High-profile names currently under discussion include veteran leaders Selima Rahman, Shirin Sultana, and Afroza Abbas, alongside a group of highly educated young professionals. Additionally, popular cultural figures such as singers Kanak Chapa and Baby Naznin are being strongly considered.
Legal and election experts note that there are no constitutional hurdles to conducting the election for the 50 reserved seats under the current framework. While there has been intermittent discussion regarding increasing the number of reserved seats, the current structure remains in place until any parliamentary amendment is passed. The BNP high command reportedly intends to ensure a strong and vocal female presence in Parliament by valuing those who faced legal and physical persecution during their years in the opposition. Activists who survived years of political trials and street-level struggles expressed hope that the party would recognize their contributions by granting them the opportunity to serve as representatives in the 13th Parliament.
