BNP Leader Detained in Comilla for Alleged Vote-Buying Attempt
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in Khatra village, under the Gunabati Union of Chauddagram Upazila, while the suspects were reportedly distributing money alongside voter slips. According to local sources, the detainees have been identified as Abdul Mannan, the General Secretary of the Ward No. 9 BNP of Gunabati Union, and a local resident known as Fakir Member. Locals claimed to have recovered two bundles of 200 BDT notes from their possession during the incident.
Witnesses reported that Abdul Mannan and Fakir Member were visiting households in Khatra village to distribute cash along with voter identification slips. The activity was reportedly noticed by local activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir, who intercepted and detained the duo, leading to significant tension in the area. Upon receiving the information, members of the Konkapait Police Outpost arrived at the scene. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mozammel Haque of the Konkapait Police Outpost confirmed the incident, stating that the suspects have been taken into custody and legal proceedings are underway.
Local voters have expressed concern, viewing the distribution of cash just hours before the election as a severe violation of the electoral code of conduct. Representatives from Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir alleged that the BNP is resorting to unethical means by offering money to lure voters. In contrast, no official response has been issued by the local BNP leadership regarding the detention. Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their "zero-tolerance" policy regarding the influence of illegal funds and have warned that strict actions will be taken against any criminal activities aimed at disrupting the electoral process.
