BNP and Jamaat Activists Clash in Chuadanga; 6 Injured
The clash, which occurred around 9:00 PM during election campaigning, left at least six people injured and has prompted the deployment of police, army, and BGB personnel to maintain order in the area.
Among the injured, Mehdi Hasan (32), the Secretary of Ward No. 1 of Darshana Municipality Jamaat, and Hasan Tareq (27), the Municipal Shramik Kalyan Secretary, received primary treatment at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital. On the other hand, BNP leaders claimed that three of their supporters—identified as Mujibor Rahman, Junaid Hossain, and Ashik—were also injured in the skirmish.
The two parties have provided conflicting accounts of how the violence began. District Jamaat Ameer Mosharraf Hossain alleged that a BNP procession launched an unprovoked attack on their election office in Uzalpur, assaulting activists and vandalizing furniture. Conversely, BNP leader Aslam Hossain claimed that the tension was sparked when Jamaat workers directed offensive slurs at their peaceful procession. He denied the allegations of attacking the Jamaat office, asserting that their own workers were targeted instead.
Dr. Al Imran Jewel of Chuadanga Sadar Hospital confirmed that the two Jamaat leaders sustained injuries to their heads and near their eyes. Darshana Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mehedi Hasan stated that while a chair was found broken at a local election office, no formal written complaint has been filed by either side yet. The situation in Uzalpur remains tense as security forces continue to monitor the village ahead of the February 12 national election.
