The 'Guptas' Have Become the New Oppressors Like Former Autocrats: Tarique Rahman
While addressing an election rally at Bell's Park in Barisal city on Wednesday, he emphasized that Bangladesh must be governed by the mandate of its people. He remarked that on the upcoming 12th, the public will elect a government that is truly accountable. However, he lamented that even after August 5th, the practice of belittling citizens and insulting intellectuals—once the hallmark of the autocracy—has not ceased. Instead, this "Gupta" group has taken on a tyrannical role in the eyes of the public.
He expressed deep resentment over the fact that the leaders of this oppressive group have used highly derogatory language toward women. According to him, the people of Bangladesh cannot expect respectful behavior from leaders and activists who lack basic respect and honor for mothers and sisters. Tarique Rahman also pointed out a statement made by a local leader of this group in Cumilla, who suggested that while they are currently pleading with the people, the public will have to beg them after the 12th. He stated that such remarks clearly reveal their true mentality and their utter disregard for the common people. He warned that if these individuals are elected, life will become unbearable for the citizens, and thus, everyone must remain vigilant and teach them a proper lesson.
Furthermore, he mentioned that this group has consistently aligned itself with every autocratic regime in the past, calling them two sides of the same coin. He noted their involvement with such forces in '71, '86, '96, and throughout the last 15 years. Regarding the local issues of Barisal, he identified river erosion as the primary challenge and stressed the need for sustainable embankments. He promised that if the public makes the right decision, the BNP would prioritize completing the development projects that were initiated during its previous tenure. He concluded by saying that national progress cannot be achieved by keeping women confined at home; men and women must work side-by-side to build the desired nation. He warned that those who harbor hatred toward women would only bring misery to the people if they gain power.
