Home Minister Bans Cattle Markets on Highways and Railways Ahead of Eid
Speaking at the Deputy Commissioners' (DC) Conference held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the Minister emphasized that this decision was made to avoid the severe traffic congestion experienced in previous years due to roadside markets. He directed the DCs and police administration to work in coordination to maintain order, noting that unauthorized markets will be prevented through regular patrols and mobile courts. To curb fraudulent activities, major cattle markets will be under special surveillance with police officers equipped with body-worn cameras, while banks and detection machines will be active to identify counterfeit notes.
Regarding the management of sacrificial animal hides, the Home Minister instructed that hides must be preserved with salt at the district and upazila levels for at least seven days, during which time no hides should be transported toward Dhaka. This measure aims to reduce pressure on Dhaka’s Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) and prevent the spoilage of hides, with the government promising to supply the necessary salt free of charge. Furthermore, to monitor Eid travel, CCTV cameras will be installed at key points on highways, and a central monitoring cell will be established at the Police Headquarters. To prevent accidents on waterways, the Minister also urged the district administration to conduct awareness campaigns and use megaphones at ferry terminals to ensure public safety throughout the festive period.
