Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Information and Broadcasting, shared this plan at the Secretariat on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, noting that the ongoing instability in the Middle East has prompted these precautionary measures against potential energy disruptions. While assuring the public that the country currently holds sufficient fuel reserves, he emphasized the necessity of transitioning toward sustainable alternatives. To support this vision, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has issued a special notification granting full exemption from all duties, taxes, and VAT on electric buses imported specifically for transporting students of schools, colleges, and universities.

Under this new policy, educational institutions can avail themselves of these tax-free benefits whether they import the vehicles directly or through a third-party agency. The NBR has further streamlined the process by committing to settle any applications related to these imports within just ten working days. To qualify for the exemption, the imported buses must adhere to specific branding requirements, including being painted in a bright yellow color and clearly displaying terms such as "School Bus," "College Bus," or "Student Bus" on the exterior. This eco-friendly initiative is expected to significantly decrease reliance on imported fuel while providing students with affordable and modern transportation services.
