PM Tarek Rahman Visits Sylhet; Lays Foundation for Major Drainage Project at Chandni Ghat
Despite heavy rainfall, the Prime Minister’s flight, operated by US-Bangla Airlines, touched down at Sylhet Osmani International Airport at 10:00 AM, where he was received by local Members of Parliament and senior government officials. His day-long visit began with a spiritual tribute at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (R.), where he entered the premises at 10:30 AM and concluded his prayers by 10:50 AM.
Following the shrine visit, the Prime Minister proceeded to the Chandni Ghat area on the banks of the Surma River, adjacent to the Sylhet Circuit House. There, he laid the foundation stone for a mega-project initiated by the Sylhet City Corporation aimed at eliminating the city's long-standing waterlogging issues. Addressing a brief gathering at the site, he underscored the government’s commitment to urban development and disaster resilience. The Prime Minister's itinerary remains packed with developmental activities, including the inauguration of the Basia River re-excavation program in Kandigaon Union of Sadar Upazila at noon.
The afternoon session of the visit is dedicated to youth, sports, and culture. At 3:00 PM, Prime Minister Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate the ‘Notun Kuri Sports’ program at the Sylhet District Stadium—a Ministry of Youth and Sports initiative designed to scout and nurture young talent. Later, at 5:00 PM, he will attend a party meeting at the District Shilpakala Academy. The Prime Minister is expected to return to Dhaka by air this evening. The entire city of Sylhet has been colorfully decorated to mark the occasion, with security measures significantly heightened across all venues. His last visit to the spiritual capital was on January 21, during the campaign for the 11th National Parliament elections.
