Teesta Master Plan Survey Completed, Announces PM Tarek Rahman
The Leader of the House shared this significant update on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, while responding to a query from Md. Majedur Rahman, a Member of Parliament from the Gaibandha-1 constituency. The Prime Minister stated that the plan recommends dredging 110 kilometers of the river to restore its navigability and ensure the protection of livelihoods for the people in the northern region.
During his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the challenges posed by the Teesta, describing it as a vital yet volatile river for northern Bangladesh. He noted that the region faces severe difficulties due to flash floods and riverbank erosion during the monsoon, followed by near-zero water flow during the dry season. The accumulation of excessive silt during the rainy season causes the riverbed to fill up, forcing the water into multiple fragmented channels and intensifying the navigability crisis. To address these perennial issues, the master plan proposes extensive excavation work across various sections of the river, including areas within the Gaibandha-1 constituency.
The Prime Minister further informed the House that the technical and financial aspects of the submitted feasibility study are currently undergoing rigorous evaluation at various levels of the government. Once this review process is finalized and the technical parameters are deemed positive, a formal timeline for project implementation will be established. The parliamentary session, presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, commenced at 11:00 AM earlier that day, marking a critical step toward addressing the long-standing water management demands of the northern districts.
