"I Too Suffered in Prison Due to Political Vendetta": PM Tarique Rahman
Speaking at the Shaheed Abu Sayed International Convention Centre in Shahbagh today, the Prime Minister shared his personal ordeal, stating that he had to spend a significant time in prison as a victim of political vengeance. During his incarceration, he witnessed firsthand the plight of many who remained behind bars for years simply because they lacked the financial means to seek legal representation—a scenario he described as unacceptable in a true democracy.
The Prime Minister emphasized that "Access to Justice" is a constitutional right for every citizen, regardless of their financial status. He highlighted the initiatives of the current government to bolster legal aid services, following the foundations laid by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former PM Begum Khaleda Zia. As the nation transitions back to democracy after fifteen years of autocratic rule, the Prime Minister asserted that the rule of law and human rights are the core pillars of a responsible state. He also advocated for mediation and legal helplines to resolve disputes outside of court, reducing the burden on the judiciary and ensuring swift justice for all.
