On Tuesday, April 28, Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam inaugurated the loading of uranium into the reactor of the first unit, making Bangladesh the 33rd nation in the world to harness nuclear energy. Utilizing state-of-the-art VVER-1200 technology, the plant is designed with advanced safety features, including an automatic core catcher, ensuring it can withstand severe natural disasters like major earthquakes and tidal surges.

The fuel loading process, involving 163 fuel bundles, is expected to take around 40 to 45 days. If the subsequent testing phases proceed as planned, approximately 300 MW of electricity could be added to the national grid within two months, with full-scale production targeted for February next year. This landmark project, built with Russian technical expertise, symbolizes the deepening ties between Dhaka and Moscow. Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, assured that the highest safety standards have been maintained and confirmed Russia’s long-term commitment to waste management and operational support for the plant.
