Job Seekers and Police Face Off at Shahbagh; Traffic Paralyzed Over Recruitment Demands
The protest began around 10:00 AM on April 26, 2026, as candidates gathered in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh. Tensions escalated when the protesters attempted to lead a procession toward the main road but were met with a police blockade, leading to a standoff at the key city intersection.
The protesters chanted various slogans, such as "We want implementation, not promises," "We want to go to the classroom, students are waiting," and "We won’t return without recruitment." According to the demonstrators, they were officially recommended for recruitment nearly two and a half months ago. However, they expressed deep frustration over the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education's silence, noting that no formal communication has been made regarding their joining dates. This prolonged delay has reportedly caused significant personal and social distress for many candidates.
Protesters at the rally made it clear that they would not vacate the streets until their demands were met. They called upon the authorities to complete the recruitment process immediately and allow them to join their respective workplaces. Meanwhile, the demonstration caused severe traffic disruptions in and around the Shahbagh area. Additional police forces have been deployed at the intersection to prevent any untoward incidents, as the protesters remained steadfast in their position throughout the afternoon.
