Government Announces 11-Paisa Increase in Bus Fares Per Kilometer
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam announced the decision on Thursday, April 23, 2026, following a high-level meeting with transport owners and labor leaders at the Secretariat. Sources from the meeting indicated that this adjustment was made to manage the rising costs in the transport sector due to the hike in fuel prices and the current economic landscape.
The Minister stated that the 11-paisa increase per kilometer would apply to both long-distance and inter-district bus services. However, he assured commuters that if the price of oil decreases in the international market and the government subsequently adjusts local prices, bus fares will be revised downward accordingly. He emphasized that this marginal increase was necessary to ensure the continued operation of transport services under the current circumstances.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Transport Owners' Association and top leaders of labor unions, who had long been advocating for a fare readjustment. The Ministry informed that a detailed notification regarding the exact effective date of the new fares will be issued shortly. Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam also issued a stern warning that strict monitoring will be in place to ensure no transport operator charges passengers in excess of the newly fixed rates, maintaining transparency standards consistent with public service regulations in many developed and NATO-member nations.
