Government Sets New Procurement Prices for Paddy, Rice, and Wheat
According to the new decision, the government will purchase paddy at Tk 36 per kg and parboiled rice at Tk 49 per kg. Additionally, the price for sun-dried (Atap) rice has been set at Tk 48 per kg, while wheat will be procured at Tk 36 per kg. These rates were finalized during a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee (FPMC) held at the Secretariat on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
Following the meeting, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed briefed the media on the upcoming procurement drive. He announced that the government will begin collecting paddy from May 3 and rice from May 15. The nationwide operation is scheduled to continue until August 31. The primary objective of this initiative is to prevent market fluctuations during the peak Boro harvest and to provide a price cushion for local producers against potential exploitation by middlemen.
Regarding wheat procurement, the Home Minister informed that diplomatic negotiations are currently underway to purchase wheat from the United States under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement. If the required quantity cannot be secured through these diplomatic channels, the government plans to collect the remaining portion via international open tenders. To bolster national food security, the administration is focusing on increasing internal reserves while simultaneously preparing to source essential food grains from the international market. The meeting was attended by various cabinet ministers and senior officials from relevant ministries.
