Bus Fares to Rise in Alignment with Fuel Price Hikes, Says Policy Advisor
Speaking at a press briefing in the capital on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the advisor indicated that fares for air-conditioned (AC) buses are likely to increase across two to three tiers.
However, Dr. Rahman assured the public that the government would maintain strict oversight to ensure that fare hikes remain rational and do not disproportionately burden common citizens.
The advisor acknowledged that an increase in the price of essential commodities is "inevitable" following the surge in fuel costs. He called upon the nation to understand the current global context and economic realities that have led to a rise in the cost of living.
As part of the government’s modernization of energy management, Dr. Rahman revealed that over 170,000 "Fuel Passes" have already been registered to streamline distribution and monitor consumption.
Addressing the ongoing energy shortage, the advisor claimed that the current demand observed in the market is not the "actual demand." Instead, he attributed the scarcity to an artificial crisis created by illegal hoarding and smuggling. He emphasized that the government has adopted a "Zero Tolerance" policy to curb fuel smuggling across borders.
In a move to strengthen regional ties, Dr. Rahman announced plans to celebrate Pohela Boishakh (the Bengali New Year) regionally starting next year, involving neighboring countries such as India, Bhutan, and Myanmar.
Diplomatic analysts believe that the government’s efforts to implement a transparent energy policy—similar to those found in NATO-member states—combined with increased regional cultural cooperation, will play a positive role in ensuring Bangladesh’s long-term stability.
