Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Sunday, April 19, following a high-level meeting with the Prime Minister, the Minister clarified that while the situation will not change overnight, the government is sincerely committed to addressing the problem through sustained efforts.

The Minister announced that the government has undertaken a large-scale canal excavation program aimed at both mitigating waterlogging and ensuring efficient agricultural irrigation. Under this special project, the canal excavation drive will be inaugurated in Jessore on April 27 and in Sylhet on May 2. The Ministry believes that the excavation and restoration of these canals will significantly improve water drainage systems and provide vital irrigation benefits to farmers.

Experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that Bangladesh requires long-term strategic planning to tackle sudden floods and waterlogging caused by climate change, similar to the advanced drainage and water management systems used in developed nations. In response to queries at the Secretariat, Minister Annie assured that this program would be expanded across the country in phases to alleviate the long-standing suffering of the general public.
