Government to Introduce 'Retirement Pension' for Veteran Journalists
The Minister made this announcement while visiting ailing journalist Ismail Hossain Negaban, who is currently undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Medical University.
Minister Swapan highlighted that while the media is considered the "fourth pillar" of a modern democratic state, workers in this sector have long remained outside the purview of institutional protection, often facing uncertainty in their later years. "It is the responsibility of the state to ensure a dignified life for those who have dedicated their careers to this honorable profession," the Minister remarked.
The government is also working to strengthen the Journalist Welfare Trust to ensure greater transparency and efficiency in supporting the media community. Minister Swapan emphasized that state patronage is essential to sustain the talented and creative individuals who contribute to the nation's intellectual growth.
Following his visit, the Information Minister handed over a financial assistance check of 100,000 BDT from the Journalist Welfare Trust to Ismail Hossain Negaban for his medical expenses. Managing Director of the Journalist Welfare Trust, Basir Jamal, and Trustee Board Member Khondokar Kawsar Hossain were also present during the visit.
The initiative is being viewed as a significant step toward aligning the professional environment for journalists with international standards. By prioritizing the protection and dignity of media professionals, the government aims to foster a more stable and responsible media landscape. This proposal has already begun to receive positive feedback from the journalistic community, who see it as a much-needed safety net for their future.
