Rooppur NPP Receives Commissioning License, Clears Way for Power Generation
Project Director Dr. Kabir Hossain confirmed the development on Thursday (April 16). With the clearance from the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA), uranium fuel loading in the first unit is expected to commence by the end of this April. If the schedule holds, the plant may start supplying electricity to the national grid by December this year.
Emphasizing the stringent safety protocols, BAERA Chairman Mahmadul Hasan stated, "Our priority is ensuring maximum safety. After resolving some critical technical issues, we have now reached a consensus on fuel loading. We are committed to a zero-accident transition."
The 2.4 GW plant, located in Ishwardi, Pabna, is being built with technical assistance from Russia's Rosatom. While the overall project timeline has been extended to 2027, the commissioning of the first unit marks a giant leap for the country's energy sector.
