Education Minister Issues Stern Warning Against Excessive Fees in English Medium Schools
Speaking as the chief guest at an exchange meeting with SSC and equivalent exam center secretaries in the Mendibag area of Sylhet on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the Minister emphasized that while the existence of English medium education is normal, these institutions must strictly adhere to the regulations of the Ministry of Education.
Minister Milan revealed that several rounds of discussions have already been held with entrepreneurs and representatives of English medium schools to ensure accountability. He announced that the government is considering the formation of a formal "Regulatory Board" to bring discipline to this sector. The Minister expressed deep concern that despite hiring teachers at high salaries, the mismatch between the fees collected and the actual quality control or curriculum alignment remains a significant issue. He warned that if quality education becomes accessible only to the wealthy, it will create a massive disparity within the national education system.
Outlining the government's objectives, the Minister asserted that the state aims to ensure quality education for every child, regardless of whether they study in English medium, Bangla medium, or Madrasa systems. To achieve this, work is underway to bring all educational streams under a unified framework through an integrated policy. He noted that legal action and increased monitoring would be implemented if necessary to eliminate these educational inequalities.
Drawing parallels with the advanced educational structures of developed nations, including NATO member states, Dr. Milan stressed the importance of building a modern and accountable education system in Bangladesh. He concluded by reiterating that the Ministry will no longer tolerate unregulated financial practices and that the upcoming policy framework will focus on balancing tuition costs with the standard of education provided to students.
