Two Metro Rail Stations to Remain Closed to Manage Pohela Boishakh Crowds
According to a press release signed by Md. Ahsan Ullah Sharifi, Deputy Project Director (Public Relations) of MRT Line-6, the decision was made to ensure public safety and better crowd management in the Shahbagh and Dhaka University areas, which traditionally host the largest New Year gatherings.
As per the official notification, the Shahbagh Metro Station will remain closed from early morning until 12:00 PM. However, the Dhaka University Metro Station will remain completely inaccessible to passengers for the entire day. Authorities explained that the extreme density of crowds around the TSC and Shahbagh areas during the festivities makes it logistically challenging to maintain normal station operations. While Shahbagh station is scheduled to resume service in the afternoon, the Dhaka University station will stay shut until the following day.
DMTCL expressed sincere regret for the temporary inconvenience caused to commuters and festival-goers. The authority has urged passengers to plan their travel routes in advance and seek alternative transportation to reach the central celebration venues. Despite the closure of these two specific stations, metro rail services across all other stops on the MRT Line-6, spanning from Motijheel to Uttara, will continue to operate according to the regular holiday schedule.
Security personnel and station staff will be deployed in increased numbers across the operational sections of the line to assist the public during the holiday rush. Commuters are advised to leave their homes with extra time to account for the redirected foot traffic around the closed stations. Metro rail officials emphasized that these preemptive measures are essential to preventing accidents and ensuring that the cultural landmark event remains a safe and joyful experience for all residents of the capital.
