Telenor Group Expresses Keen Interest in Expanding 5G Technology in Bangladesh

The high-level meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Cabinet Division of the Secretariat, focused on the overall development of the telecommunications sector and the strategic roadmap for deploying 5G technology across the nation. Senior officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and a high-powered delegation from Telenor Group were present during the discussions.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman lauded Telenor’s long-standing contribution to the growth of Bangladesh’s information technology sector and its role in making mobile services accessible to the masses. He emphasized that private sector participation is essential to achieving the goal of a "Smart Bangladesh" and ensuring high-speed internet connectivity reaches every remote corner of the country. The Prime Minister reassured international investors that his government is committed to maintaining a stable and business-friendly environment where investments are protected through transparency and accountability.

During the meeting, Telenor CEO Benedicte Schilbred Fasmer praised Bangladesh’s recent economic progress and expressed the group’s specific interest in leading the transition toward 5G technology. She noted that Telenor is eager to enhance its service quality and create new digital possibilities through a sustained strategic partnership with the government. Fasmer also opined that the government’s initiatives for IT-based employment and digital transformation are significantly boosting the confidence of global investors in the Bangladeshi market.

The Prime Minister’s commitment to facilitating foreign direct investment was a key highlight of the talks, as the administration seeks to leverage global expertise for national infrastructure projects. Telenor, which operates in Bangladesh through its subsidiary Grameenphone, remains a pivotal player in the country’s digital landscape. Analysts believe that a successful rollout of 5G would not only revolutionize the telecommunications sector but also provide the necessary technological backbone for advanced industries, including e-commerce, telemedicine, and automated manufacturing.
