Md. Abdur Rahman Khan, Chairman of the National Revenue Board (NBR), announced this landmark shift during a pre-budget consultation with stakeholders at the NBR headquarters on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

The announcement coincided with the final day of the extended deadline for the current year's tax returns. The move aims to eliminate the traditional "last-minute rush" and simplify compliance for millions of individual and corporate taxpayers.

Incentives for Timely Filing: While the system will remain open year-round, the Chairman clarified that those who file within the officially designated "tax window" will remain eligible for special incentives and tax rebates.

Delayed Submissions: Taxpayers filing after the standard deadline will still be able to use the online portal but may face standard penalties or lose out on specific rebate benefits.

The NBR Chairman outlined a strategic vision for the upcoming 2026-27 budget, focusing on broadening the tax net rather than increasing existing tax rates.

Reducing Exemptions: The NBR plans to gradually reduce tax exemptions across various sectors to bolster national revenue.

Combatting Evasion: Intelligence activities will be intensified to identify and penalize tax evaders, ensuring that the burden of revenue collection is shared more equitably.

This initiative is part of a broader "Digital NBR" roadmap designed to minimize physical interaction between taxpayers and tax officials, thereby reducing the scope for harassment and corruption. By transitioning to a 24/7 online submission model, the NBR expects a significant increase in the number of active taxpayers and a more predictable flow of revenue into the state treasury.
