The incident occurred at 8:13 AM as the Shantahar-bound train from Panchagarh was entering the station's track number one. According to railway authorities, two wheels of the ‘Ga’ (গ) coach slipped off the tracks, though no casualties or major injuries were reported.

Setabganj station master Majnur Rahman confirmed that while the derailment took place on the primary line, rescue operations were initiated immediately. In an effort to minimize passenger distress and maintain the travel schedule, authorities decided to detach the affected carriage and leave it at the station, allowing the rest of the train to proceed toward its destination in Shantahar.

Dinajpur Railway Station Superintendent ABM Ziaur Rahman stated that the accident did not cause a wider schedule collapse across the northern rail network. Other intercity services, including the Dhaka-bound "Ekta Express" originating from Panchagarh, successfully navigated through Setabganj and Dinajpur stations on their regular timelines using the secondary tracks. Normal operations on track number two ensured that hundreds of commuters were not stranded despite the early morning disruption.
