Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Pledges Service to All Citizens in Maiden Speech
Commencing his speech shortly after 11:15 AM following a recitation from the Holy Quran, the Prime Minister paid deep tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War and the victims of the July 2024 uprising. He emphasized that the sacrifices made during various democratic movements across Bangladesh's history remain the foundation of the current administration’s vision for a reformed state.
A significant portion of the address was dedicated to the legacy of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Highlighting her lifelong struggle for democracy, the Prime Minister described her as an uncompromising leader who refused to yield to autocratic or fascist regimes. He also honored the contributions of the late President Ziaur Rahman, noting that their principles of national sovereignty and public service continue to serve as the government’s guiding light. The Prime Minister underscored that his administration is committed to upholding the ideals of justice and transparency that were championed by his predecessors.
In a unifying gesture toward the newly elected lawmakers and the public, the Prime Minister declared that he no longer represents a single political party but is dedicated to serving every citizen of Bangladesh, regardless of their political affiliation or background. He called upon all members of parliament to work collectively to rebuild national institutions and ensure that the benefits of democracy reach the grassroots level. This maiden speech is seen as a formal commitment to the "31-Point" reform agenda, signaling a new chapter in the country’s legislative and political culture focused on accountability and inclusive growth.
