Repatriation Process Begins for Prime Suspects in Sharif Osman Hadi Murder
Speaking to journalists at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 9, 2026, the IGP stated that the suspects, Rahul alias Faisal Karim Masud and his associate Alamgir Hossain, were apprehended in West Bengal, India. The arrests were made by the West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) in the Bongaon area, near the North 24 Parganas border, following precise intelligence provided by Bangladesh’s Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).
The suspects allegedly confessed during preliminary interrogation to shooting Hadi on December 12, 2025, in Dhaka’s Paltan area, after which they illegally entered India through the Meghalaya border. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) noted that the successful operation was facilitated by a recent high-level visit from the DGFI chief to India, which resulted in a commitment from Indian authorities to crack down on fugitives linked to the case. Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of the "July Uprising" and a candidate for the February 2026 national elections, died on December 18 at Singapore General Hospital, an event that triggered widespread national unrest and diplomatic tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi.
Currently, both Faisal and Alamgir are in Indian police custody as the legal framework for their extradition is being finalized. The Bangladesh government has assured the public that justice will be served, viewing this breakthrough as a major milestone in the investigation of politically motivated violence. With the capture of the shooter and the mastermind's accomplice, officials aim to bring the trial to a swift conclusion to honor the memory of the youth leader widely recognized as a martyr of the democratic movement.
