PM Tarique Rahman to Launch Nationwide Canal Excavation Program on March 18
The government has planned to excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals across the country to modernize the irrigation system and eliminate persistent waterlogging issues in agricultural lands.
The project in Dinajpur involves the re-excavation of a 12-kilometer stretch connecting Kaharole and Birganj, which is expected to bring approximately 6,000 bighas of land under new cultivation. State Minister for Water Resources, Farhad Hossain Azad, highlighted that the construction of a sluice gate alongside the excavation would significantly reduce irrigation costs for local farmers. Supported by the World Bank’s "Climate Smart Agriculture and Water Management Project," this initiative aims to ensure long-term sustainability through continuous monitoring by the Water Development Board to prevent future siltation.
