Eight Fuel Tankers Anchor at Chittagong Port Amid Hormuz Tensions
The arrival of these ships provides significant relief as the ongoing conflict has effectively halted new commercial traffic through the Persian Gulf, sparking fears of a domestic fuel crisis.
According to Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim, the vessels are part of a larger convoy of 15 cargo ships currently arriving or en route to Bangladesh. The eight tankers that docked today are carrying approximately 375,000 tonnes of energy products, including Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and diesel. Notable arrivals include the LNG carriers Al Zour and Al Jassasiya from Qatar, and the LPG carrier Sevan from Oman’s Sohar Port.
While these arrivals secure supply for the immediate term, long-term uncertainty remains. Local maritime agents have noted that several other vessels, such as the LNG carrier Liberal, remain trapped inside the Strait of Hormuz awaiting safe passage. To mitigate potential shortages, the government has already begun purchasing additional LNG from the spot market at higher prices. Port authorities have assured that the unloading process for the newly arrived fuel will be expedited to maintain the national power and industrial supply chain.
