BNP Proposes Deputy Speaker Post for Jamaat-e-Islami in New Parliament
Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat, the Minister noted that this offer is aimed at ensuring an inclusive parliamentary environment as Jamaat-e-Islami takes its seat as the primary opposition in the 13th National Parliament. He also confirmed that the President will deliver the inaugural speech of the first session in strict accordance with constitutional mandates.
Addressing the ongoing debates surrounding constitutional amendments, the Home Minister clarified that no unconstitutional measures can be introduced in the National Parliament. He specifically addressed rumors regarding the Constitutional Reform Commission, stating that its members do not have the legal standing to participate directly in parliamentary sessions, as the right to engage in legislative proceedings is reserved solely for elected Members of Parliament. This statement aims to quell speculation about the role of external advisors in the formal law-making process.
Political analysts view this proposal by the BNP as a strategic move to foster cooperation between the treasury and opposition benches during a period of transition. While Jamaat-e-Islami has yet to formally announce its acceptance of the Deputy Speaker role, the gesture highlights a shift toward a more collaborative legislative framework. The Home Minister emphasized that the government is committed to maintaining the sanctity of the parliamentary process while navigating the reforms demanded by the current political climate.
