Bangladesh Nominates FM Dr. Khalilur Rahman for President of 81st UN General Assembly
This initiative aims to reclaim the global leadership role for Bangladesh after a gap of nearly four decades.
The election for the 81st UNGA presidency is scheduled for June 2 at the UN Headquarters in New York. Under the regional rotation policy, the seat is designated for the Asia-Pacific Group of States this year, where Bangladesh will face Cyprus as its primary contender. Although Palestine was initially in the race, they have reportedly withdrawn their candidacy.
According to sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the interim government had previously considered former advisor Md. Touhid Hossain, but the nomination was recently updated in favor of the current Foreign Minister. Historically, Bangladesh last held this esteemed position during the 41st session (1986-87) under the leadership of Humayun Rashid Chowdhury. If successful, this will mark a historic comeback for Bangladesh on the world stage.
