Despite their successful coalition in the February 12 national elections, the parties confirmed their independent paths during a press conference held Tuesday night, February 24, 2026, at the NCP's temporary office in Banglamotor, Dhaka.

NCP’s Chief Organizer for the Northern Region, Sarjis Alam, stated that Jamaat-e-Islami has already begun solo preparations, and the NCP is following suit. The NCP plans to release its primary candidate lists for 12 City Corporations, 495 Upazilas, and 330 Municipalities within the next few weeks. While the focus is currently on independent campaigns, Sarjis Alam did not entirely rule out the possibility of forming an 11-party alliance later if the political climate demands it.

Key highlights from the announcement include:

  • Asif Mahmud’s Candidacy: NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain hinted at his intention to contest the mayoral race for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

  • Criticism of Administrators: The party leaders criticized the recent appointment of administrators to city corporations under a political government, demanding a clear and immediate roadmap for local polls.

  • Human Rights Concerns: NCP leaders raised alarms over recent police operations, alleging that attacks on civilians and journalists are creating a "reign of terror."

This decision signals a new phase of political competition between former allies as they look to consolidate their grassroots influence. With the 13th Parliament already in session, the local government elections will serve as a crucial test of popularity for both the ruling BNP and the emerging NCP-Jamaat block.
