National Martyrs' Army Day: President and Prime Minister Honor Victims of Pilkhana Tragedy
Shortly after 10:00 AM, the two leaders separately placed floral wreaths at the monuments of the fallen soldiers and stood in a moment of silence to honor their memory. Following the wreath-laying ceremony, they participated in a special prayer service (Munajat) seeking eternal peace for the departed souls.
February 25 is recognized as one of the darkest chapters in the history of Bangladesh and is now officially observed as "National Martyrs' Army Day." On this day in 2009, a brutal mutiny broke out at the headquarters of the then Bangladesh Rifles (now Border Guard Bangladesh) in Pilkhana. The two-day massacre resulted in the senseless killing of 57 brilliant army officers, including the then Director General Major General Shakil Ahmed. The violence also claimed the lives of Major General Shakil’s wife and several other civilians, totaling 74 casualties.
To commemorate the day, the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with leaders from various political and social organizations, were present at the Banani Military Cemetery to offer their respects. Across the nation, people are remembering the "sun-sons" of the soil with deep respect and humility. The government’s official observance underscores its commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and upholding the legacy of those who sacrificed their lives during the Pilkhana mutiny.
