City Corporation Elections Announced: Dhaka and Chattogram on Priority List
Speaking in an interview with a private television channel on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the Minister stated that elections will be organized based on the expiration of current tenures. Under this priority framework, Dhaka North, Dhaka South, and Chattogram City Corporations are expected to go to the polls first.
The Minister emphasized that political administrators are inherently more effective and responsive to public needs than bureaucratic systems. He asserted that as representatives of the people, political figures play a more dynamic role in local development and service delivery. A major policy shift is also on the horizon regarding the use of political party symbols in these elections. The Minister revealed that the final decision on whether local polls will remain partisan or return to a non-partisan format will be determined during the first session of the 13th National Parliament, scheduled to begin on March 12, 2026.
This announcement is expected to trigger immediate political activity in the two capital cities and the port city of Chattogram. Following these major hubs, the government plans to hold elections in other City Corporations and local government bodies in phases. Sources from the ministry indicated that these swift electoral measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure that government services are delivered directly and efficiently to the doorsteps of citizens through elected representatives.
