Mobile Users in Bangladesh Face Temporary Network Disruptions Today
The Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) issued an urgent notice stating that the disruptions are expected to occur between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. This initiative is part of an experimental drive by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to test the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system, which is designed to identify and manage the use of mobile handsets within the country's cellular networks.
AMTOB clarified that the temporary disconnection will primarily affect users operating unregistered or illegal handsets. During this two-hour window, the system will conduct a mechanical test to verify the legitimacy of active devices on the network. Authorities have advised the public not to panic, as any disconnected lines are scheduled to be automatically restored once the technical trial concludes at midday. The mobile operators expressed regret for the inconvenience caused, emphasizing that these measures are essential for enhancing national security and curbing the market for smuggled or counterfeit mobile devices.
This technical exercise is a key step in the government's broader effort to ensure that all mobile devices used in the country are properly documented and taxes are paid. To avoid future complications or permanent disconnections, customers are encouraged to verify their handset's registration status through the official BTRC portal. By finalizing the NEIR implementation, the telecom sector aims to provide a more secure and reliable service environment for millions of subscribers while protecting the interests of legitimate importers and manufacturers.
