While President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office, significant speculation surrounds his tenure. Despite past calls for his resignation following the 2024 uprising, the BNP previously prioritized constitutional continuity. However, the political landscape has shifted following the formation of the new elected government.

President Shahabuddin reportedly expressed his intention to step down in an interview with Reuters last December, citing a lack of administrative authority and a sense of being "marginalized" during the interim government's tenure. He indicated that he preferred to conclude his chapter through voluntary resignation once a new government assumed power.

As the nation looks toward the Bangabhaban for a formal announcement, several prominent names have emerged as potential successors:

Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain: A senior member of the BNP Standing Committee and a former Professor at Dhaka University, he is widely considered by party insiders as the most qualified candidate for the presidency due to his vast political experience and clean image.

Nazarul Islam Khan: Another high-profile name in discussion; however, rumors suggest he may instead be appointed to a vital role as the Political Adviser to the Prime Minister.

Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan: Known for his academic background and transparent political career, his name is also being strongly considered for the highest office in the land.

According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, an election for the presidency must be held within 90 days of the position becoming vacant. If the President submits his resignation to the newly elected Speaker of the House, the post will be declared vacant without the need for impeachment. The new President will then be elected through a secret ballot by the Members of Parliament (MPs).

While President Shahabuddin extended his congratulations to both outgoing Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during yesterday's ceremony, analysts believe a transition in the presidency will consolidate the country's democratic restoration.
