Earlier in the morning, during a routine meeting at Police Headquarters, he informed senior officers about his decision to step down. Multiple sources at the headquarters confirmed the matter.

A senior official said the meeting primarily focused on security preparations for International Mother Language Day on 21 February, along with other routine issues. During the session, the IGP disclosed his intention to resign. Fellow officers reportedly urged him to reconsider.

Although no final announcement was made at the meeting, he later formally submitted his resignation to the ministry. The sudden move has caused surprise among officials at Police Headquarters, and the news quickly spread among members of the force.

In January, he had surrendered his official passport and applied for an ordinary passport.

Attempts to reach him by phone for comment were unsuccessful.

Following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, several key administrative changes were made. As part of that process, Baharul Alam was appointed IGP on 21 November 2024. He had previously retired from the police service in 2020.

The interim government appointed him on a two-year contractual term, which was scheduled to end on 21 November this year. However, he stepped down before completing the tenure.
